Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Jesus Feeds Everyone
Reading: Luke 9:11b-17
Leader Prep
Don't worry about doing this perfectly. If the children hear one good idea about God, Jesus, prayer, kindness, forgiveness, or the Gospel, this time has been worthwhile.
Summary
Jesus was with a huge crowd of people who were hungry. Even though the disciples only had five loaves of bread and two fish, Jesus blessed the food and there was enough for everyone to eat until they were full.
Key Points
- Jesus cares about all our needs, including when we are hungry
- Jesus can do amazing things with small gifts we offer Him
- When Jesus blessed and broke the bread, everyone had enough and more
- This miracle shows us how Jesus feeds us in the Eucharist
Background
This Gospel presents the multiplication of loaves and fishes, a pivotal sign that prefigures the Eucharist. Jesus takes, blesses, breaks, and gives the bread, using the exact four verbs that appear in the Last Supper narrative and in every Mass. The abundance of twelve baskets left over signifies the inexhaustible grace available through the Eucharist. Theologically, this miracle reveals Jesus as the new Moses providing manna and as the divine provider who satisfies all hunger, both physical and spiritual. For children, emphasize that Jesus took something small, blessed it, and made it enough for everyone. Set aside deeper Eucharistic theology about Real Presence for older catechesis. Focus on Jesus caring for people and doing something wonderful with a little food that was shared.
Session Flow
Opening Prayer
Invite the children to pray with you, then read the opening prayer below. If many don't know the sign of the cross, teach the whole group.
Warm-up
Ask the warm-up question before the reading. There are no wrong answers; this is just to help the children connect today's reading to their own lives.
Have you ever had to share something with a lot of people, even when you did not think you had enough?
Example: One time my mom made cookies and lots of my friends came over, and I was worried there would not be enough for everyone to have one.
Read the Scripture
Read the day's selected passage aloud. The full Scripture text is not included here. Use a Children's Lectionary if your parish has one available. A children's Bible may also be helpful for younger children. Otherwise, read from a standard lectionary, Bible, or USCCB.org. Read slowly, with short pauses.
Reading Questions
Ask the questions conversationally. You do not need to use every question if time is short. The example answers are for leader preparation, not scripts or required answers.
-
How many loaves of bread and fish did the disciples have?
Example: They had five loaves of bread and two fish, which is not very much food at all.
-
What did Jesus do with the bread and fish before giving it to the people?
Example: Jesus looked up to heaven and He blessed the food and then He broke it into pieces.
-
What happened after everyone finished eating?
Example: There was so much food left over that they filled up twelve whole baskets with the pieces.
-
Why do you think Jesus wanted to feed all those hungry people?
Example: I think Jesus really cared about the people and He did not want them to go home hungry and sad.
Application Questions
Use these questions to help the children connect the reading to their own lives this week. Simple, concrete answers are best.
-
How would you feel if you were in that big crowd and Jesus gave you food when you were really hungry?
Example: I would feel so happy and surprised because I was hungry and Jesus made sure I got to eat.
-
What is something small you could share at school, trusting that it could help someone?
Example: I could share my crayons or my snack with a friend who forgot theirs at home today.
-
This week, who is someone in your family you could help by sharing something you have?
Example: I could share my toys with my little brother when he wants to play with me after school.
Recap
Prayer of the Faithful
Before returning to the assembly, invite the children to share their own prayer intentions. Their prayers may be serious, simple, funny, or very specific. After each child's prayer, the group may respond: "Lord, hear our prayer." Lastly, include the suggested prayer below.
Mass Connection
If time allows, point out this connection just before returning to Mass. This helps children see that Children's Liturgy is still part of the Mass.
