Jesus Helps at a Wedding

Reading: John 2:1-11

Leader Prep

Don't worry about doing this perfectly. If the children hear one good idea about God, Jesus, prayer, kindness, forgiveness, or the Gospel, this time has been worthwhile.

Summary

Jesus, his mother Mary, and his friends went to a wedding party. When the wine ran out, Mary asked Jesus to help. Jesus turned water into wine, showing everyone that he was special and could do amazing things.

Key Points

  • Mary noticed a problem and trusted Jesus to help
  • Jesus listened to his mother and helped the people at the wedding
  • This was the first miracle Jesus did, showing his power and glory
  • The servants obeyed Jesus even when his instructions seemed strange
  • Jesus cares about ordinary moments in our lives, like parties and celebrations

Background

This passage presents the first of Jesus's signs in John's Gospel, revealing his divine glory and prompting his disciples to believe in him. The transformation of water into wine carries rich theological symbolism: the old covenant giving way to the new, ordinary life transformed by Christ's presence, and the abundance of messianic joy. The stone jars used for Jewish purification rituals being filled with superior wine points to Jesus fulfilling and surpassing the old religious practices. Mary's role as intercessor is significant, as she brings human need to Jesus and instructs others to do whatever he tells them. For children, emphasize Mary's trust in Jesus and how Jesus helps people in everyday situations. Set aside the deeper sacramental and covenant theology for now.

Session Flow

Opening Prayer

Invite the children to pray with you, then read the opening prayer below. If many don't know the sign of the cross, teach the whole group.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Dear God, thank you for inviting us to be close to you today. Help us to trust in Jesus like Mary did, knowing that he can help us with anything. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Warm-up

Ask the warm-up question before the reading. There are no wrong answers; this is just to help the children connect today's reading to their own lives.

Have you ever been to a party or celebration where something went wrong, like running out of food or forgetting something important?

Example: One time at my birthday party we ran out of juice and my mom had to go to the store really fast to get more for everyone.

Bridge to the reading: Sometimes things go wrong at parties and we need help to fix them. In today's reading, we will hear about a wedding party where they ran out of something very important, and Mary asked Jesus to help.

Read the Scripture

Read the day's selected passage aloud. The full Scripture text is not included here. Use a Children's Lectionary if your parish has one available. A children's Bible may also be helpful for younger children. Otherwise, read from a standard lectionary, Bible, or USCCB.org. Read slowly, with short pauses.

Reading Questions

Ask the questions conversationally. You do not need to use every question if time is short. The example answers are for leader preparation, not scripts or required answers.

  1. Where were Jesus, Mary, and the disciples in today's story?

Example: They were at a wedding party, which is a big celebration when two people get married and everyone comes to be happy with them.

  2. What problem happened at the wedding that Mary noticed?

Example: The wine ran out and there was nothing left for the people at the party to drink, which would have been very embarrassing.

  3. What did Mary tell the servants to do?

Example: Mary told the servants to do whatever Jesus tells them to do, because she knew Jesus could help fix the problem.

  4. Why do you think Jesus helped the people at the wedding even though it was not a big emergency?

Example: I think Jesus helped because he cares about people being happy and he wanted to help his mom and the people at the party.

Application Questions

Use these questions to help the children connect the reading to their own lives this week. Simple, concrete answers are best.

  1. How do you think the servants felt when Jesus told them to fill the jars with water instead of wine?

Example: I think they felt confused because water is not wine, but they listened anyway because Mary told them to do what Jesus said.

  2. When someone in your family asks you to help, even if you do not understand why, what can you do?

Example: I can trust them and help anyway, like when my mom asks me to clean up before guests come and I do not know who is coming.

  3. This week, who is someone you can trust to help you when something goes wrong?

Example: I can trust my mom or dad or my teacher to help me when something goes wrong, like if I forget my lunch at home.

Recap

Today we heard how Jesus went to a wedding with Mary and his friends. When the wine ran out, Mary trusted Jesus to help. She told the servants to do whatever Jesus said. Jesus turned water into the best wine, showing everyone how special and powerful he is. We can trust Jesus to help us too, just like Mary did.

Prayer of the Faithful

Before returning to the assembly, invite the children to share their own prayer intentions. Their prayers may be serious, simple, funny, or very specific. After each child's prayer, the group may respond: "Lord, hear our prayer." Lastly, include the suggested prayer below.

For all the families celebrating happy times together, that Jesus will be with them in their joy, we pray to the Lord.

Mass Connection

If time allows, point out this connection just before returning to Mass. This helps children see that Children's Liturgy is still part of the Mass.

When we bring up the gifts of bread and wine during the Offertory, we can remember that Jesus used water and wine at the wedding to show his power. The wine at Mass becomes something even more special, just like the water became wonderful wine at the wedding.

Closing Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thank you, Jesus, for showing us your love at the wedding in Cana. Help us to trust you like Mary did and to listen to what you ask us to do. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Word Search

Optional activity: use the word search after the discussion if you have time, or send it home with the children. The words relate to today's Children's Liturgy Scripture passage.
