21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Narrow Door
Reading: Luke 13:22-30
Leader Prep
Don't worry about doing this perfectly. If the children hear one good idea about God, Jesus, prayer, kindness, forgiveness, or the Gospel, this time has been worthwhile.
Summary
Jesus tells us about a special door that leads to God's kingdom. He wants us to try hard every day to love God and follow Him, not just say we know Him but really live as His friends.
Key Points
- Jesus uses the image of a narrow door to teach that entering God's kingdom requires effort and commitment
- Knowing about Jesus is different from truly knowing and following Jesus
- God invites everyone from all places to His kingdom, but we must respond with our whole hearts
- Being close to Jesus means living the way He teaches, not just being near Him
Background
This Gospel contains challenging imagery: Jesus speaks of a narrow door, people being shut out, and weeping. The narrow door is not about God being exclusive but about the need for genuine discipleship rather than casual association. The master who says 'I do not know where you are from' represents the difference between superficial knowledge of Jesus and authentic relationship. The reversal language ('last will be first') emphasizes that God's kingdom values are different from worldly status. For children, emphasize that Jesus wants us to really know Him and follow Him every day, like a true friend, not just say His name sometimes. Set aside the frightening judgment imagery and focus on the positive invitation to be Jesus' real friend through daily choices.
Session Flow
Opening Prayer
Invite the children to pray with you, then read the opening prayer below. If many don't know the sign of the cross, teach the whole group.
Warm-up
Ask the warm-up question before the reading. There are no wrong answers; this is just to help the children connect today's reading to their own lives.
What is the difference between knowing someone's name and being their real friend?
Example: Well, I know the name of the kid who lives down the street, but my real friend is Emma because we play together and share snacks and tell secrets.
Read the Scripture
Read the day's selected passage aloud. The full Scripture text is not included here. Use a Children's Lectionary if your parish has one available. A children's Bible may also be helpful for younger children. Otherwise, read from a standard lectionary, Bible, or USCCB.org. Read slowly, with short pauses.
Reading Questions
Ask the questions conversationally. You do not need to use every question if time is short. The example answers are for leader preparation, not scripts or required answers.
-
What did Jesus say the door to God's kingdom is like?
Example: Jesus said the door is narrow, which means it is small and you have to really try hard to go through it.
-
What did some people say to try to get in after the door was closed?
Example: They said they ate and drank with the master and that he taught in their streets, so they should be let in.
-
Why do you think the master said he did not know those people?
Example: Maybe because they were just near him but did not really listen to him or follow what he said to do.
-
What surprising thing did Jesus say about who will be first and last?
Example: Jesus said that some people who are last will be first, and some who think they are first will be last.
Application Questions
Use these questions to help the children connect the reading to their own lives this week. Simple, concrete answers are best.
-
How does it feel when someone says they are your friend but does not play with you or listen to you?
Example: It feels kind of sad and confusing because I want a real friend who actually spends time with me and cares about me.
-
What are some ways we can be real friends of Jesus, not just people who know His name?
Example: We can pray to Him every day and be kind to others and listen to the stories about Him and try to do what He teaches.
-
This week at home, what is one thing you can do to show Jesus you really want to follow Him?
Example: I could say a prayer before bed every night and try really hard to be nice to my little brother even when he bothers me.
Recap
Prayer of the Faithful
Before returning to the assembly, invite the children to share their own prayer intentions. Their prayers may be serious, simple, funny, or very specific. After each child's prayer, the group may respond: "Lord, hear our prayer." Lastly, include the suggested prayer below.
Mass Connection
If time allows, point out this connection just before returning to Mass. This helps children see that Children's Liturgy is still part of the Mass.
