Mary, Mother of God

Mary Treasured Everything

Reading: Luke 2:16-21

Leader Prep

Don't worry about doing this perfectly. If the children hear one good idea about God, Jesus, prayer, kindness, forgiveness, or the Gospel, this time has been worthwhile.

Summary

The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and found baby Jesus with Mary and Joseph. They told everyone what the angels said about Jesus. Mary listened carefully and kept all these wonderful things in her heart.

Key Points

  • The shepherds rushed to see Jesus after the angels told them the good news
  • Mary treasured everything in her heart, thinking deeply about what it all meant
  • Jesus received his name on the eighth day, just as the angel had said
  • We celebrate Mary as the Mother of God because Jesus is God's own Son

Background

This reading bridges the Christmas narrative to the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. The Greek word Luke uses for Mary 'treasuring' (syntereo) implies active preservation and contemplation, not passive memory. Theologically, this feast affirms the Council of Ephesus (431 AD) declaration of Mary as Theotokos, 'God-bearer,' because her son is truly divine. The naming of Jesus on the eighth day fulfills both Jewish law (circumcision) and the angel Gabriel's earlier instruction. For children, emphasize Mary's loving attention to everything about Jesus, keeping it safe in her heart like a treasure, and how we can do the same with what we learn about Jesus. Set aside the theological complexities of the Theotokos title and circumcision.

Session Flow

Opening Prayer

Invite the children to pray with you, then read the opening prayer below. If many don't know the sign of the cross, teach the whole group.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Dear God, thank you for giving us Mary, the mother of Jesus. Help us to treasure the stories about Jesus in our hearts, just like Mary did. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Warm-up

Ask the warm-up question before the reading. There are no wrong answers; this is just to help the children connect today's reading to their own lives.

Have you ever heard some really exciting news that you wanted to remember forever? What did you do to keep it safe in your memory?

Example: When my grandma told me we were going to the beach, I was so happy that I kept thinking about it over and over so I would not forget!

Bridge to the reading: Mary heard the most amazing news anyone could ever hear, news about her baby Jesus being the Savior of the world. In today's reading, we will hear how Mary kept all these wonderful things safe in her heart like a precious treasure.

Read the Scripture

Read the day's selected passage aloud. The full Scripture text is not included here. Use a Children's Lectionary if your parish has one available. A children's Bible may also be helpful for younger children. Otherwise, read from a standard lectionary, Bible, or USCCB.org. Read slowly, with short pauses.

Reading Questions

Ask the questions conversationally. You do not need to use every question if time is short. The example answers are for leader preparation, not scripts or required answers.

  1. Who came to visit baby Jesus, Mary, and Joseph?

Example: The shepherds came to visit them! They hurried from the fields where they were watching their sheep at night.

  2. What did the shepherds do after they saw baby Jesus?

Example: They told everyone they met about what the angels had said and what they saw when they found the baby.

  3. What did Mary do when she heard all these amazing things about Jesus?

Example: Mary treasured all these things in her heart. She kept thinking about them and remembering every special word.

  4. Why do you think Mary wanted to keep these things in her heart?

Example: Because Jesus was so special to her, and she wanted to remember everything about him and think about what it all meant.

Application Questions

Use these questions to help the children connect the reading to their own lives this week. Simple, concrete answers are best.

  1. How does it feel when someone tells you something really special about someone you love?

Example: It makes me feel so happy inside, like when my mom tells me something nice about my baby brother.

  2. What is something you have learned about Jesus that you want to keep in your heart?

Example: I want to remember that Jesus loves me so much and that he was born at Christmas to be my friend forever.

  3. This week, how can you be like Mary and think about Jesus in a quiet moment?

Example: Before I go to sleep, I can close my eyes and think about baby Jesus and thank him for loving me.

Recap

Today we heard how the shepherds found baby Jesus with Mary and Joseph. They told everyone the wonderful news about Jesus! Mary listened to everything and treasured it all in her heart. We can be like Mary and keep the good things we learn about Jesus safe in our hearts too.

Prayer of the Faithful

Before returning to the assembly, invite the children to share their own prayer intentions. Their prayers may be serious, simple, funny, or very specific. After each child's prayer, the group may respond: "Lord, hear our prayer." Lastly, include the suggested prayer below.

For all mothers, that like Mary they may treasure their children with love and care, we pray to the Lord.

Mass Connection

If time allows, point out this connection just before returning to Mass. This helps children see that Children's Liturgy is still part of the Mass.

When we hear the name of Jesus at Mass, we bow our heads slightly as a sign of honor. In today's reading, Jesus received this holy name, which means 'God saves.'

Closing Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Loving God, thank you for Mary, the mother of Jesus. Help us to treasure everything we learn about Jesus in our hearts, just as Mary did. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Word Search

Optional activity: use the word search after the discussion if you have time, or send it home with the children. The words relate to today's Children's Liturgy Scripture passage.
