Baby Jesus Is Born

Reading: Luke 2:1-14

Leader Prep

Don't worry about doing this perfectly. If the children hear one good idea about God, Jesus, prayer, kindness, forgiveness, or the Gospel, this time has been worthwhile.

Summary

Tonight we hear the wonderful story of when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph had to travel far from home, and baby Jesus was born in a humble place and laid in a manger. Angels appeared to shepherds in the fields to share the good news that the Savior had been born.

Key Points

  • Jesus, the Son of God, was born as a tiny baby in Bethlehem
  • Mary wrapped Jesus in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them
  • Angels announced this good news to shepherds, ordinary working people
  • The angels called Jesus 'Savior' and 'Christ the Lord'
  • God chose to come to us in the humblest way possible

Background

This Gospel presents the Incarnation: God becoming human in Jesus Christ. The theological depth here is immense: the eternal Word takes on flesh, the King of Kings is born not in a palace but among animals, and the first announcement goes not to religious leaders but to lowly shepherds. The manger (a feeding trough for animals) becomes the first resting place for the One who will call himself the Bread of Life. For children, emphasize the concrete, wondrous scene: the long journey, the baby in the manger, the angels lighting up the night sky, and the shepherds hurrying to see. Set aside abstract theological concepts like salvation history or the hypostatic union. Focus on the simple truth that God loved us so much he came to be with us as a baby.

Session Flow

Opening Prayer

Invite the children to pray with you, then read the opening prayer below. If many don't know the sign of the cross, teach the whole group.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Dear God, thank you for the wonderful gift of baby Jesus, born on this holy night. Help us to welcome him into our hearts with joy, just like the shepherds did long ago. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Warm-up

Ask the warm-up question before the reading. There are no wrong answers; this is just to help the children connect today's reading to their own lives.

Have you ever had really exciting news that you just had to tell someone right away? What was it like?

Example: One time my grandma was coming to visit and I was so excited I ran to tell my mom and my sister and even my dog because I could not keep it inside me!

Bridge to the reading: That feeling of wanting to share wonderful news is exactly what happens in tonight's story. Angels appear in the sky with the most exciting news ever: God's Son has been born, and they cannot wait to tell everyone!

Read the Scripture

Read the day's selected passage aloud. The full Scripture text is not included here. Use a Children's Lectionary if your parish has one available. A children's Bible may also be helpful for younger children. Otherwise, read from a standard lectionary, Bible, or USCCB.org. Read slowly, with short pauses.

Reading Questions

Ask the questions conversationally. You do not need to use every question if time is short. The example answers are for leader preparation, not scripts or required answers.

  1. Where was baby Jesus born?

Example: Baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem because Mary and Joseph had to travel there for the census that the emperor ordered.

  2. Where did Mary lay baby Jesus after he was born?

Example: Mary wrapped baby Jesus in cloths and laid him in a manger, which is like a box where animals eat their food.

  3. Who did the angels appear to with the good news about Jesus?

Example: The angels appeared to shepherds who were out in the fields at night watching over their sheep to keep them safe.

  4. Why do you think God sent angels to tell shepherds first, instead of kings or important people?

Example: Maybe God wanted to show that Jesus came for everyone, even people who work hard and are not rich or famous.

Application Questions

Use these questions to help the children connect the reading to their own lives this week. Simple, concrete answers are best.

  1. How do you think the shepherds felt when the sky filled with angels singing?

Example: I think they were really surprised and maybe a little scared at first, but then they felt happy and excited about the good news.

  2. Baby Jesus was born in a simple place, not a fancy palace. What does that tell us about who Jesus came for?

Example: It shows that Jesus came for regular people like us, not just for rich people, and he loves everyone no matter what.

  3. This week, how can you share the joy of Christmas with someone in your family?

Example: I could give my sister a hug and tell her I love her, or I could help my mom clean up and say Merry Christmas with a big smile.

Recap

Today we heard the beautiful story of Christmas night. Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem, where baby Jesus was born and laid in a manger. Angels filled the sky and told shepherds the wonderful news: a Savior had been born for all people. God loved us so much that he sent his own Son to be with us.

Prayer of the Faithful

Before returning to the assembly, invite the children to share their own prayer intentions. Their prayers may be serious, simple, funny, or very specific. After each child's prayer, the group may respond: "Lord, hear our prayer." Lastly, include the suggested prayer below.

For all the children around the world who will hear the story of Jesus' birth tonight, that their hearts may be filled with joy, we pray to the Lord.

Mass Connection

If time allows, point out this connection just before returning to Mass. This helps children see that Children's Liturgy is still part of the Mass.

When the priest says 'Glory to God in the highest' at Mass, we are echoing the exact words the angels sang to the shepherds on Christmas night. Listen for those words tonight and remember the angels' song.

Closing Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thank you, Lord, for this holy night when Jesus was born for us. Help us to carry the joy of Christmas in our hearts and share it with everyone we meet. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Word Search

Optional activity: use the word search after the discussion if you have time, or send it home with the children. The words relate to today's Children's Liturgy Scripture passage.
