All Saints
Happy with Jesus
Reading: Matthew 5:1-12a
Leader Prep
Don't worry about doing this perfectly. If the children hear one good idea about God, Jesus, prayer, kindness, forgiveness, or the Gospel, this time has been worthwhile.
Summary
Jesus sat on a mountain and told everyone about a special kind of happiness. He said that people who are gentle, kind, and who make peace are blessed, which means God loves them very much and they will be with Him forever.
Key Points
- Jesus teaches us what it means to be truly happy in God's eyes
- Being blessed means God's special love is with us
- The saints we celebrate today lived the Beatitudes
- Gentleness, kindness, and peacemaking bring us close to God
- Heaven is the home God promises to those who follow His ways
Background
The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12a) form the opening of Jesus's Sermon on the Mount and describe the paradoxical blessings of God's Kingdom. Each beatitude names a disposition or condition that the world often overlooks or despises, yet Jesus declares these people 'blessed' (makarios in Greek), meaning they possess divine favor and share in eschatological joy. On All Saints, the Church pairs this reading with Revelation's vision of the multitude in white robes to show that the saints are those who lived the Beatitudes. The theology here is countercultural: true happiness is not worldly success but conformity to Christ's own humble, merciful, and peace-bringing character. For children, emphasize that 'blessed' means God is happy with us and loves us in a special way, and that being gentle, kind, and making peace are ways we can be like the saints. Set aside detailed eschatological explanations and the suffering aspects of some beatitudes.
Session Flow
Opening Prayer
Invite the children to pray with you, then read the opening prayer below. If many don't know the sign of the cross, teach the whole group.
Warm-up
Ask the warm-up question before the reading. There are no wrong answers; this is just to help the children connect today's reading to their own lives.
Can you tell me about a time when being gentle or kind made you feel really happy inside?
Example: One time my little brother was crying and I gave him a hug and sat with him, and it made me feel so warm and happy inside.
Read the Scripture
Read the day's selected passage aloud. The full Scripture text is not included here. Use a Children's Lectionary if your parish has one available. A children's Bible may also be helpful for younger children. Otherwise, read from a standard lectionary, Bible, or USCCB.org. Read slowly, with short pauses.
Reading Questions
Ask the questions conversationally. You do not need to use every question if time is short. The example answers are for leader preparation, not scripts or required answers.
-
Where did Jesus sit when He taught the people?
Example: Jesus sat on a mountain, and He was up high so everyone could see Him and hear what He was saying.
-
Jesus said some people are blessed. What kinds of people did He say are blessed?
Example: Jesus said people who are gentle, people who make peace, and people who are kind and merciful are blessed.
-
What do you notice about the things that make people blessed in this reading?
Example: I notice that Jesus did not talk about being rich or having lots of toys. He talked about being nice and caring about others.
-
Why do you think Jesus wants us to be gentle and to make peace with others?
Example: I think Jesus wants us to be gentle and make peace because that is how we show love, and God wants us to love each other.
Application Questions
Use these questions to help the children connect the reading to their own lives this week. Simple, concrete answers are best.
-
How does it feel inside when someone is gentle with you, like when they share or speak kindly?
Example: It feels really nice and warm inside, like someone really cares about me and wants me to be happy and safe.
-
What is one way you could be a peacemaker at home or at school this week?
Example: If my friend and my other friend are arguing, I could help them talk nicely and maybe share so everyone is happy.
-
Who is someone you could be extra gentle with this week, and what could you do for them?
Example: I could be extra gentle with my grandma by sitting quietly with her and helping her with little things she needs.
Recap
Prayer of the Faithful
Before returning to the assembly, invite the children to share their own prayer intentions. Their prayers may be serious, simple, funny, or very specific. After each child's prayer, the group may respond: "Lord, hear our prayer." Lastly, include the suggested prayer below.
