God Loves the World So Much

Reading: John 3:14-21

Leader Prep

Don't worry about doing this perfectly. If the children hear one good idea about God, Jesus, prayer, kindness, forgiveness, or the Gospel, this time has been worthwhile.

Summary

Jesus tells us that God loves the whole world so much that He sent His only Son to save us. God did not send Jesus to punish us but to bring us into the light and give us life with Him forever.

Key Points

  • God's love for the world is so great that He gave us His Son Jesus
  • Jesus came to save us, not to judge or punish us
  • Walking in the light means doing good things and staying close to God
  • Believing in Jesus means trusting Him and following His way

Background

This passage contains Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus and includes John 3:16, one of the most quoted verses in Scripture. The theological weight here involves soteriology: God's initiative in salvation, the distinction between condemnation and salvation, and the metaphor of light versus darkness representing truth and sin. The bronze serpent reference (Numbers 21) prefigures the crucifixion. For children, emphasize that God loves us so much He sent Jesus, and that Jesus is like a warm light we can walk toward. Set aside the complexities of judgment, the serpent typology, and abstract concepts of eternal life versus perishing.

Session Flow

Opening Prayer

Invite the children to pray with you, then read the opening prayer below. If many don't know the sign of the cross, teach the whole group.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Dear God, thank You for loving us so much that You sent us Jesus. Help us to walk in Your light and feel Your love today. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Warm-up

Ask the warm-up question before the reading. There are no wrong answers; this is just to help the children connect today's reading to their own lives.

Have you ever been somewhere really dark, and then someone turned on a light? How did it feel when the light came on?

Example: One time I was in my room at night and it was so dark I could not see anything, and when my mom turned on the light I felt so much better and not scared anymore.

Bridge to the reading: That good feeling when the light comes on is a little like what Jesus talks about in today's reading. He tells us that He is like a light that God sent into the world because God loves us so very much.

Read the Scripture

Read the day's selected passage aloud. The full Scripture text is not included here. Use a Children's Lectionary if your parish has one available. A children's Bible may also be helpful for younger children. Otherwise, read from a standard lectionary, Bible, or USCCB.org. Read slowly, with short pauses.

Reading Questions

Ask the questions conversationally. You do not need to use every question if time is short. The example answers are for leader preparation, not scripts or required answers.

  1. In today's reading, Jesus says God loved the world so much that He did something very special. What did God do?

Example: God loved the world so much that He sent His only Son Jesus to us so we could be saved.

  2. Did Jesus say He came to punish the world or to save the world?

Example: Jesus said He did not come to punish the world but He came to save the world and help everyone.

  3. Jesus talks about light in this reading. What do you think people who love the light like to do?

Example: People who love the light like to do good things and they are not afraid to show what they do because it is good.

  4. Why do you think Jesus calls Himself a light for us?

Example: I think Jesus calls Himself a light because He helps us see what is good and He shows us the way to go to God.

Application Questions

Use these questions to help the children connect the reading to their own lives this week. Simple, concrete answers are best.

  1. How does it feel to know that God loves you so much that He sent Jesus just for you?

Example: It makes me feel really happy and special inside, like I am important to God and He cares about me a lot.

  2. What is one good thing you could do this week to be like someone who walks in the light?

Example: I could share my toys with my little sister even when I do not want to because that is a good thing to do.

  3. When you talk to Jesus in prayer, how could you thank Him for being our light?

Example: I could tell Jesus thank You for loving me and helping me know what is good and for always being with me.

Recap

Today we heard that God loves the whole world so much that He sent His only Son Jesus to save us. Jesus is like a bright light that helps us see what is good and shows us how much God loves us. When we follow Jesus, we are walking in the light.

Prayer of the Faithful

Before returning to the assembly, invite the children to share their own prayer intentions. Their prayers may be serious, simple, funny, or very specific. After each child's prayer, the group may respond: "Lord, hear our prayer." Lastly, include the suggested prayer below.

For children who feel sad or lonely and need to feel God's love shining on them, we pray to the Lord.

Closing Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Thank You, God, for loving us so much and for sending Jesus to be our light. Help us to walk in Your light this week and share Your love with others. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
