God Gave Us His Best Gift

Reading: John 3:16-18

Leader Prep

Don't worry about doing this perfectly. If the children hear one good idea about God, Jesus, prayer, kindness, forgiveness, or the Gospel, this time has been worthwhile.

Summary

In today's reading, Jesus tells us that God the Father loves the whole world so much that He gave us His only Son. Jesus came to save us and bring us close to God. This is the greatest gift of love anyone has ever given.

Key Points

  • God the Father loved the world so much that He gave us His Son, Jesus
  • Jesus came to save us, not to say bad things about us
  • When we believe in Jesus, we get to be close to God always
  • Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who are one God

Background

This Gospel passage is one of the most beloved in Scripture, often called 'the Gospel in miniature.' It presents the entire economy of salvation in a few verses: the Father's love initiates, the Son is given as gift, and through belief we receive eternal life. The theological context is Jesus' nighttime conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee seeking understanding. John 3:16 emphasizes that salvation is offered universally ('the world') and that God's motive is love, not condemnation. For children, emphasize the simple truth that God loves them like a perfect parent who gives the best gift possible, and set aside the more complex discussions of belief versus condemnation, eternal judgment, and Trinitarian theology proper. Let the children simply marvel that God loved them enough to send Jesus.

Session Flow

Opening Prayer

Invite the children to pray with you, then read the opening prayer below. If many don't know the sign of the cross, teach the whole group.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Dear God, thank You for loving us so much and for giving us Jesus, the best gift ever. Help us to feel Your love today and to share it with others. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Warm-up

Ask the warm-up question before the reading. There are no wrong answers; this is just to help the children connect today's reading to their own lives.

Has someone ever given you a really special gift because they loved you? What was it, and how did it make you feel?

Example: My grandma gave me a special teddy bear because she loves me, and it made me feel really happy and warm inside because I knew she was thinking about me.

Bridge to the reading: That wonderful feeling when someone gives you a gift because they love you is exactly what we will hear about today. In today's reading, Jesus tells us about the most amazing gift ever given, a gift that God the Father gave to the whole world because He loves us so much.

Read the Scripture

Read the day's selected passage aloud. The full Scripture text is not included here. Use a Children's Lectionary if your parish has one available. A children's Bible may also be helpful for younger children. Otherwise, read from a standard lectionary, Bible, or USCCB.org. Read slowly, with short pauses.

Reading Questions

Ask the questions conversationally. You do not need to use every question if time is short. The example answers are for leader preparation, not scripts or required answers.

  1. In today's reading, who does Jesus say God loved?

Example: Jesus says that God loved the world, which means He loved all the people everywhere, including you and me and everyone.

  2. What did God give to the world because He loved us so much?

Example: God gave His only Son, Jesus, to the world because He loved us, and that was the best gift He could ever give us.

  3. What does Jesus say will happen for people who believe in Him?

Example: Jesus says that people who believe in Him will not be lost but will get to be with God always and always in heaven.

  4. Why do you think sending Jesus shows that God really loves us?

Example: I think it shows God really loves us because Jesus is so special to God, and giving your most special person to help others means you really care about them a lot.

Application Questions

Use these questions to help the children connect the reading to their own lives this week. Simple, concrete answers are best.

  1. How does it feel inside when you hear that God loves you so much that He sent Jesus for you?

Example: It makes me feel really special and happy inside, like when someone gives me a big hug and I know they care about me a lot.

  2. When you want to show someone in your family that you love them, what is something kind you could do for them?

Example: I could help my mom or dad clean up the toys without being asked, or I could draw a picture for my brother to make him smile.

  3. This week, how could you tell a friend at school about how much God loves them?

Example: I could tell my friend that God loves them so much and that Jesus came to be with us, and maybe I could invite them to come to church with me.

Recap

Today we heard that God the Father loves the whole world so much that He gave us His Son, Jesus. This is the greatest gift anyone has ever given. God sent Jesus not to say bad things about us, but to save us and help us be close to God always. We are so loved by God!

Prayer of the Faithful

Before returning to the assembly, invite the children to share their own prayer intentions. Their prayers may be serious, simple, funny, or very specific. After each child's prayer, the group may respond: "Lord, hear our prayer." Lastly, include the suggested prayer below.

For children around the world who feel sad or alone, that they may come to know how much God loves them, we pray to the Lord.

Closing Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Loving God, thank You for giving us Jesus, the best gift of all. Help us to remember Your love every day and to share it with everyone we meet. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
