Christmas Night
The Angels Tell the Good News
Reading: Luke 2:1-14
Leader Prep
Don't worry about doing this perfectly. If the children hear one good idea about God, Jesus, prayer, kindness, forgiveness, or the Gospel, this time has been worthwhile.
Summary
Tonight we hear about when baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Mary wrapped him up and laid him in a manger because there was no room anywhere else. Angels came to tell shepherds the wonderful news that the Savior was born.
Key Points
- Jesus, the Son of God, was born as a tiny baby in a humble place
- The angels announced this good news first to simple shepherds, not to kings or important people
- The angels said this baby brings great joy for everyone in the whole world
- God chose an ordinary manger to welcome His Son into the world
Background
This passage presents the Incarnation in its most tender form: God entering creation as a vulnerable newborn. The theological weight is immense: the eternal Word becomes flesh, the Savior arrives not in a palace but in an animal's feeding trough, and the first evangelists are angels addressing marginalized shepherds. The Gloria sung by the heavenly host ('Glory to God in the highest') echoes directly in our Mass. The manger detail is not incidental; it signals that God's kingdom operates by different values than worldly power. For children, emphasize the concrete, joyful scene: baby Jesus in the manger, the angels bringing happy news to shepherds, and how God wanted everyone to know about this special baby. Set aside deeper theological discussions of the Incarnation or Messianic prophecy for older audiences.
Session Flow
Opening Prayer
Invite the children to pray with you, then read the opening prayer below. If many don't know the sign of the cross, teach the whole group.
Warm-up
Ask the warm-up question before the reading. There are no wrong answers; this is just to help the children connect today's reading to their own lives.
Have you ever had really exciting news that you just had to tell someone right away?
Example: Yes! When my mom told me we were getting a puppy, I was so excited I ran to tell my grandma on the phone right away!
Read the Scripture
Read the day's selected passage aloud. The full Scripture text is not included here. Use a Children's Lectionary if your parish has one available. A children's Bible may also be helpful for younger children. Otherwise, read from a standard lectionary, Bible, or USCCB.org. Read slowly, with short pauses.
Reading Questions
Ask the questions conversationally. You do not need to use every question if time is short. The example answers are for leader preparation, not scripts or required answers.
-
Where did Mary lay baby Jesus after he was born?
Example: She wrapped him up in cloths and laid him in a manger, which is like a box where animals eat their food.
-
Who were the people out in the fields that night watching their sheep?
Example: They were shepherds who were taking care of their sheep outside in the fields at nighttime.
-
What did the angel tell the shepherds about the baby?
Example: The angel said do not be afraid because a Savior was born for them and this was good news of great joy for everyone.
-
Why do you think God sent angels to tell simple shepherds instead of kings or rich people?
Example: Maybe God wanted everyone to know about Jesus, not just fancy important people, because Jesus came for all of us.
Application Questions
Use these questions to help the children connect the reading to their own lives this week. Simple, concrete answers are best.
-
How do you think the shepherds felt when they suddenly saw the bright angels in the dark sky?
Example: I think they were really surprised and maybe a little scared at first, but then they felt so happy and amazed.
-
Baby Jesus was born in a simple place with animals around. How can we welcome Jesus in simple ways at home?
Example: We could pray together as a family before bed or say thank you to Jesus for our food and our home.
-
This week, who could you share the happy news about Jesus being born with?
Example: I could tell my friend at school about Christmas and how Jesus was born as a little baby to help us.
Recap
Prayer of the Faithful
Before returning to the assembly, invite the children to share their own prayer intentions. Their prayers may be serious, simple, funny, or very specific. After each child's prayer, the group may respond: "Lord, hear our prayer." Lastly, include the suggested prayer below.
Mass Connection
If time allows, point out this connection just before returning to Mass. This helps children see that Children's Liturgy is still part of the Mass.
